Chapter 11

Early the next night I packed my necessities and disassembled the wood coffin, burning it in the wood stove. As I placed the last few pieces of broken timber into the fire box, I waited for the coach to arrive. I became numb, numb to anything I felt. The only thing I allowed myself to feel was the detachment from the world on which I walked. I wanted to be alone to grieve, but how much can one grieve in a lifetime? I didn’t think I could live through more than one human lifetime and at that time I did not even care to. I wanted the emotional pain to end, my soul to stop crying, though my eyes were dry.

I paced around in a daze until I heard a knock at the door. I let the coachman in and he grabbed my trunks taking them down to the carriage. As I left the room and board, I took one last look at Dublin and never wanted to look upon it again. Once seated in the carriage I almost felt relieved to be leaving.

As the night ticked by slowly, I felt the need for company. I asked the driver to stop for a few moments so I could stretch my legs. That night I hadn’t fed so the enticing scent from the driver was more intensified, but my desire for company was stronger than my need for sustenance. Quickly walking around the carriage, I then stepped up to sit with the coachman.

Dawn slowly approached and my instincts reminded me that I should prepare the coach and protect myself from the impending sun.

“Would you mind if I put up extra curtains around the cabin?” I asked sweetly, while turning to face him so I could watch his facial expressions. He looked at me for a moment puzzled, but thought no harm would come of it.

“Sure why not,” he paused, “but may I ask why?”

“Well, the ones that are in there are so old and worn, the sun will surely penetrate the old fabric easily and I get a reaction from the sun. It’s a nuisance really.” I said being as convincing as I could and doing a good job of it, I thought and just as I perceived, he accepted my answer. About an hour later I said good night to him and made my way into the carriage.

“If you please, do not disturb me at all during the day. I am quite tired and need the rest. You may stop and take breaks for yourself, but do not bother me.” I said while placing the dark maroon velvet curtains up.

“Sure, whatever pleases ya, lass.” He said and climbed back up to his bench seat. I knew he thought I was eccentric, which made me smile.

“Thank you sir, you are very kind.” I said as I closed the last curtain over. I quickly made large stitches to keep the curtains from separating then settled down onto the poorly cushioned bench and read myself to sleep.
